My name is Maya Davies, and I live in Toronto, Ontario. I’ve always loved watching movies. When the pandemic hit, I made it a goal to watch atleast one new movie a day. I kept this up for quite a while, and in doing so, I started to watch movies like it was a sport. I loved discovering niche movies and diving into international cinema. For the past three years, I set myself the goal of watching at least 100 movies I had never seen before each year, and I have surpassed it each year! As you can see, I have no social life. But that’s because I have discovered a whole new world of movies, beyond the hollywood, and I fell inlove.
Throughout my movie-watching journey, along with the countless video essays I consumed , I began to notice a pattern in how women were often portrayed in film (obvious, maybe. But some of the “woke” film representations don’t sit right with me either). The further I looked into this discourse, the more complex i discovered it was . A simple “Bechdel test (….) would not suffice, it’s not black and white.
I wanted to create a platform that opened up discourse about films that feature women (notice I don’t specify movies about women). I think it’s important to continue discussing how these representations make us feel. I wanted to further blend this with my love of movie exploration, because many of the best movies I’ve seen are seldom discussed.
